Joshua’s practice concentrates on intellectual property litigation, particularly patent and trademark litigation, as well as copyright and trade secret protection, license and technology agreements, portfolio development, and Intellectual Property issues arising in corporate and finance transactions. Joshua handles complex business litigation, primarily in the electrical engineering, telecommunications and computer science fields. In addition to representing clients in patent infringement suits in the U.S. district courts, Joshua also represents clients before the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Education

Joshua received his Juris Doctorate from Whittier College School of Law (2007), with a concentration in Intellectual Property. He received his Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, with a minor in Information Systems, from California State University, Fullerton (2003).

Joshua is admitted to practice in the State of California (2007), before the U.S. District Courts for the Central and Southern Districts of California (2008 & 2011), the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (2013) and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (2005).

Legal Expertise

Joshua counsels clients with respect to various patent issues, including IP licensing and transactions, and rendering non-infringement and invalidity opinions. Joshua has worked on a variety of patent matters, covering a wide range of technologies including digital video and image compression, scaling and display; computer hardware, firmware and software; entertainment lighting, audio and event staging systems.

Joshua’s practice also focuses on trademark law. His experience covers all stages of the trademark lifecycle, including procurement, oppositions and cancellation proceedings, management, strategic counseling and enforcement. Joshua is also skilled in assisting with trademark portfolio management, including selecting trademarks with particular value, implementing national and international filing and enforcement strategies in accordance with clients’ commercial objectives and setting up guidelines for properly promoting, advertising and using trademarks worldwide.

Prior to joining SHERMAN IP, Joshua was a patent attorney practicing in New York. Before graduating from law school, he worked as a software developer and domain administrator.
